To close out World Breastfeeding Week 2012, I’m expressing my gratitude to all of you breastfeeding moms out there. Do you think it’s a little strange to be thanked for breastfeeding your baby? And why would someone thank you?
As moms, we’re connected in so many ways, and breastfeeding is one of those. When you see another mom nursing in public, do you feel a twinge of connection with her? You know a little bit about her challenges, inspiration, and struggles, even if you don’t know her personally. And it’s nice to see someone breastfeeding her baby whenever and wherever her baby needs it, because it makes you feel like there’s one more person in this world who understands you a little bit. And every mom breastfeeding in public helps to make it a little more of the norm instead of the exception.
Maybe one day the phrase “breastfeeding debate” won’t exist. In fact, I bet that phrase has only been around for less than half a century anyway. Maybe one day we won’t hear stories about moms being kicked out of public places for feeding their babies. Maybe one day it will be just as typical to see a mom nursing her baby as it is to see a mom bottle feeding her baby. Because no matter how you nurture your baby, you should be able to do it anywhere.
Next time you see a mom nursing in public, let her know you appreciate it by giving her a breastfeeding thank you card. You can print these breastfeeding thank you cards out on card stock and keep them in your wallet. It might make an exhausted, busy mom’s day.
